Introducing New Metso Waste Techology

Cleanaway's M&J Preshred 4000M

Cleanaway Waste Management Limited is Australia’s leading total waste management, industrial and environmental services company. Cleanaway have supported Australian businesses for over 50 years, delivering solutions that offer extraordinary benefits not only for its customers, but also for the communities. In 2018, Cleanaway welcomed Toxfree and Daniels Health into the Cleanaway family, increasing the reach and scale to over 6,000 expert staff and a fleet of almost 4,500 specialist vehicles across more than 260 locations around Australia. Cleanaway are Australia’s largest waste, recycling, industrial and liquids service provider with a substantial network of state-of-the-art facilities, transfer stations, engineered landfills, liquid treatment plants and refineries.
Management at Cleanaway’s Willawong Transfer station had decided to get in front of the impending levy changes in Queensland and started looking at potentially shredding materials onsite to reduce volumes and improve separation. The initial discussions between Cleanaway and Tutt Bryant Equipment were around Cleanaway’s requirement to purchase suitable plant to provide adequate reduction of MSW (Municipal solid waste) to enable efficient screening into separate products for further downstream treatment. This next stage may include picking or re-loading for transport to landfill at considerably less volume. The reduction of household waste logically leant toward shredders and due to great experiences with Metso crushers, the Willawong management team decided to explore the Metso M&J PreShredder range as they have a great reputation for a high-quality product and simple, efficient process technology. Due to a clear understanding of the impending needs of the site and ongoing volume increases, further details and specification options on the M&J 4000M were discussed with Site Operations Manager, Chris Thomson. Due to the large installed base of these units globally, and Chris’ personal experience with Metso Crushers and Screens, he felt confident in the quality of the product and the support from Tutt Bryant.
After some benchmarking and consideration of several different supplier offerings, Cleanaway ordered the M&J4000M and it was delivered to their Willawong operation in July 2019. Operations Manager Chris Thomson says, “The main reason for selecting the M&J 4000 was that we were confident in it providing the necessary volume reduction because of its aggressive twin shaft design, knew it would be very reliable because of the Metso build quality and understood that the production capacity would be there”.
Metso Waste Recycling shredding technology is based on an extremely aggressive knife design and open cutting table, which provides outstanding performance when dealing with mixed and challenging materials. These key features make M&J PreShred units extremely resistant to wear caused by materials and waste normally considered as unshreddable; including solid steel, reinforced concrete, and rocks.
After 5 months of operation, Chris Thomson said “The machine has performed far better than expected. It is user-friendly, even for staff with little exposure to Shredders, I can’t say a bad word about this machine. We got a good feeling about how this relationship was going to go before the machine arrived as Metso Waste and Tutt Bryant senior managers came to site and met with us to discuss the machine and our application. The machine has exceeded our expectation and the after-sales support and service from Tutts has been excellent, can’t fault it. What else could you ask for?”

Throughput can be as high as 100 tons/hour, depending on the type of input, the number of knives specified for the cutting table, and the loading procedure. The interaction between the rotating knives on these two shafts running asynchronously, and in both directions, ensures that the input material is constantly in motion, thus preventing bridging and providing maximum shredding capacity.
